While during his campaign, several of Obama’s utterances- “lipstick on a pig” or the “guns and religion” snafus quickly got taken out of context and put in heavy rotation. But for the most part Obama, in addition to just being eloquent, appears to carefully his words so it is more difficult for them to be taken out of context. Even with their speech writers and talking points, that’s a skill many politicians don’t have.

Also, I wonder how, “[Obama’s] eloquent response to a national tragedy may very well change the course of the nation.” The tone of political rhetoric will be more civil for awhile, who knows how long though, but will it necessarily be more substantive? Perhaps, in lue of incendiary comments, politicians begin to choose their words with more care, that is “think,” we may very well be on our way to more meaningful political debate and Obama can be given some credit for raising the level of political discussion. But I think another reason is the realization, which Gifford herself had mentioned, that incendiary rhetoric has consequences despite of whether it was meant literally or not.
