The resources which were drained during the hunt for Bin Laden are one of the primary causes of the United State’s “downward slide.” His death has done little to change these circumstances although many might now feel a resurgence of national pride, however vulgarly expressed. The bright side of Bin Laden’s death is that, at least in media discourse, it has been mentioned that the case for continuing the war in Afghanistan is seriously weakened. Whatever one’s feeling towards the assassination and the theatrics that followed, one can only hope that an ugly ugly era of American history may be finally nearing an end.
